There was no better way to close the year any better than with a Premier League game between high-flying Liverpool and determined Manchester City, who locked horns at Anfield on 31 December.

High expectations have not been met however, but Liverpool fans will have plenty of reason for optimism as their team recorded their fourth win in a row to stay in the title chase behind leaders Chelsea.

Nottingham Forest 2-3 Chelsea: Reds made to wait for safety after late collapse

Nottingham Forest must wait to make mathematically certain of their Premier League status after conceding two late goals in a dramatic 3-2 home loss to Chelsea.

Forest began Saturday s thrilling game knowing a point from their final two matches would be enough to secure safety after Luton Town s 3-1 loss at West Ham and Burnley s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham.

After Willy Boly cancelled out Mykhailo Mudryk s strike inside the opening 16 minutes, Callum Hudson-Odoi thought he had won the game with a delightful 74th-minute curler against his former side.

However, Chelsea silenced the City Ground through quickfire goals from Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson in the final 10 minutes.

Chelsea s third win in a row keeps them seventh and level on points with Newcast…

Liverpool star Salah outscoring eight Premier League teams in 2017-18

Mohamed Salah s match-winning brace in Liverpool s 2-1 win over Leicester City took him on to 23 goals in all competitions this season – more than eight sides have managed overall in the Premier League.

New record signing Virgil van Dijk looked on from the stands as Jamie Vardy capitalised on an early lapse to give Leicester a third-minute lead at Anfield but Salah proved decisive with a pair of expert finishes after half-time extending Liverpool s unbeaten league run to 12 matches.

Salah now has 17 in the top-flight alone and six in the Champions League, which is more than bottom two West Brom (18) and Swansea City (19), when their goals in the ELF Cup are taken into account.

Crystal Palace (22), Newcastle United (21), Southampton (20), Brighton and Hove Albio…

Capello hopes for positive end to painful 2010

Fabio Capello will bring the curtain down on a painful year for England by offering hope of a brighter future in Wednesday s friendly against France at Wembley.

Capello ends 2010 with his previously unblemished reputation significantly tarnished by England s abject failure at the World Cup.

The Italian appeared completely devoid of ideas as England crashed out with just one win from their four matches in South Africa, but he held onto his post despite an angry reaction from the English public and has been attempting to win back support with a cautious overhaul of his squad.

His cause was hardly helped however by a dour 0-0 draw at home to Montenegro in October that hampered England s bid to qualify for Euro 2012.

It is that result which has prompted Cape…

On this day in 2020: Liverpool sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich

Liverpool signed Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara from European champions Bayern Munich on this day in 2020.

The Spain international was in the last year of his deal with the Bundesliga club and arrived at Anfield for an initial fee of £20million.

Thiago’s signing had been anticipated by supporters for some time and he went straight into the squad to face Chelsea, playing 45 minutes in a 2-0 win.

Thiago told the club’s website: “I think it’s an amazing feeling.

“I was waiting for this moment for a long time and I am very, very happy to be here.

“When the years are passing, you are trying to win as much as you can – and when you win, you want to win more.

Conference Championship NFL Parlay Picks: 49ers Continue to Lean on Mitchell

Conference Championship weekend is upon us in the NFL, as we are fresh off one of the best weekends of football ever with three walk-off field goals and an overtime touchdown to secure our final four teams. Giants vs Eagles Divisional Round Props: Giants Get their Feelings Hurt

The New York Giants will look for a second straight playoff upset when they visit the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFC Divisional Playoff matchup on Saturday.

The Eagles (14-3) beat the Giants (10-7-1) in both of their regular season matchups, and also have a healthy Jalen Hurts at quarterback as they try to advance to the NFC Championship.

Hurts should be able to find opportunities on the ground and in the air against New York, so we’ll be targeting him among our player props this Divisional Playoff weekend in my free NFL picks for Giants vs. Eagles below.

Panthers vs Dolphins Odds, Picks, and Predictions Week 6: Heads Carolina

It’ll be a case of deja vu for the Miami Dolphins with another bottom feeder of an opponent in town for them to pad their record against in Week 6 NFL odds. It’s been a rough start for the Carolina Panthers who are the only winless team in the league. Given what we’ve seen from these teams this season, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see the Dolphins as 13.5-point favorite on the NFL odds with a game total of 48.5.

There’s a lot to break down here, including some obvious strengths vs weaknesses as well as the possibility of this being a lookahead spot for the Dolphins. Let’s dig in and I’ll give you my free NFL picks for Panthers vs. Dolphins on October 15th.
